Will You Be My Yoga Partner? : L & V's Story

It all started with V's curiosity. He was walking around the neighborhood one day and stumbled upon our humble Surya Yoga center. At that time, yoga wasn't yet popular in Malaysia, but V was curious and heard positive benefits of yoga.

He thought, rather simply, 'why not?' He started his first class 10 years ago at Surya Yoga and continues to appreciation this exercise form till today to compliment his other competitive sports! He recalls, " there was only 1-2 males then with the majority of female participants" Yes, you can safely call him one of our very first students.

We asked him, what drew him to starting yoga.

He said rather cheekily that he thought it would be a breeze because he swam and played sports regularly! After a lesson or two, V then found out that yoga was "more difficult than anticipated and more painful than expected"

It made him perspire just like any other exercise.

He said that yoga helped him build inner muscles he never knew he even had! V leads a rather active lifestyle. Yoga helped him to stay fit, lean and compliments his other sports related activities.

How about L? V started his yoga journey alone at first. L, after 2 years then joined him only after some convincing. L gladly decided to make the inaugural visit. She loved it!

It's been 7+ years later, she has never looked back. And she is a an active participant and always look forward to the exercises. The trainers are well educated in their knowledge, personal in their approach and the atmosphere is happy and friendly.

L enjoys the benefits of toning, stretching and muscle strengthening very much. She is aware Yoga has some meditation form which she prefers not to participate based on her religious preference, hence this is a form of exercise for her.

Her first few lessons with Josephine(Jo), our Surya Yoga founder and instructor, she said, was rather eye opening. She said that even back then, Jo often played soothing contemporary music during classes. Clear instructions were always given and L found it rather easy to pick up yoga. All preconceived notions that yoga was a religious practice slowly faded away. She realized that yoga was truly just about overall health and well being. She now in fact, encourages her kids to practice yoga as well!
